August Club Meeting

We are planning on meeting in person at 6:30pm at Fair Isle Wednesday August 3rd for an in person meeting! Fair Isle is also releasing their version of the Ukraine beer that day, and wanted people to being what they made with the wort on that day so we can taste all of them.

Again, as COVID cases are trending up, the plan is to try and spread out with the doors open. Bring some homebrew to share! Once the homebrew starts flowing we can’t have more Fair Isle Beers, but once we hit around 8:30 anyone that wants to stay for beers from the taproom can head out into the beer garden.

July club meeting

Meeting announcement (from Kevin):

We are planning on meeting in person at 6:30pm at Fair Isle next Wednesday July 6th for an in person meeting! Again, as COVID cases are trending slightly up, the plan is to have the brewery space and the Orchid Room open, with doors open. I am hoping that helps spread us all out a bit more.

Bring some homebrew to share! Once the homebrew starts flowing we can’t have more Fair Isle Beers, but once we hit around 8:30 anyone that wants to stay for beers from the taproom can head out into the beer garden. It doesn’t look like there will be a pop-up food truck this time (though I said that last time and there totally was), but there usually is some food around the other breweries in the neighborhood that you could hit up first!

November club meeting with Jon from Oppegaard Meadery

Our next club meeting will be on Wednesday November 3rd at 7:00pm via Zoom.

We will continue to meet virtually until we mention otherwise.

If any club members wish to organize in person groups feel free, though please do so safely.

___

Our educational guest this month will be Jon from Oppegaard Meadery to discuss mead making techniques. Oppegaard Meadery creates an amazing variety of Mead using a wide range of both common and rare ingredients.

Honey is always the main ingredient, but also expect to find fruit, spices, hops, herbs and even tea leaves in the unique Meads we craft.

Find out why this many thousands of year old drink is making such a buzz still in the modern age.

Jon has recommended the Drengr as a great mead for pointing out a lot of the differences between beer and low abv Mead. They have other meads available (Blueberry is more “wine like” but something like the hausakljúfr isn’t) that Cassie will be picking up from their meadery in Tukwila. If you’re interested in buying mead for the meeting, please reply in Slack to coordinate with Cassie.

__

After our education talk depending on the number of folks present, we’ll either split into small groups or just discuss homebrew as a big group. Looking forward to seeing y’all real soon!

August club meeting—Back to virtual

Our next club meeting will be on Wednesday August 4th (THIS WEDNESDAY) at 6:30pm via Zoom.

Given the current situation with COVID variants, new masking recommendations, the number of club members with household members who are unable to be vaccinated we have decided to meet VIRTUALLY this month. Hopefully we’ll be back in person again soon, but better safe than sorry.

If any club members wish to organize in person groups feel free, though please do so safely.

Our educational guest this month will be Kaleb from Yakima Valley Hops, to discuss hops in general, but specifically wet hops. Kaleb was kind enough to help us out with our You Are Not Alone project we did last year in collaboration with Reuben’s Brews to raise money for workers in the hospitality industry.

As we approach fall we get closer to the special time of the year when hops are fresh and we get a once a year chance to brew with them! If you’re new to the Pacific Northwest, fresh and wet hops might be new to you- Kaleb’s going to talk to us a little bit about what they are and how to make the best use of them in our brewing.

After our education we want to try something new: splitting into small groups to get a little bit more conversation going between folks! Try to think of something that you’d like to talk with other homebrewers about, whether it’s a beer you’ve made or been thinking about making, some process questions, or picking folks’ brains about a particular style.

July Club Meeting - In Person!

We made it!

Our next club meeting will be on Wednesday July 7th at 6:30pm, and we are happy to announce that we are able to meet IN PERSON once again at Fair Isle!

While we are meeting in person again starting this month COVID is still very much a thing that many of our members have to be concerned about due to having young children who are unable to be vaccinated. For this reason, please only come to the in person meeting at Fair Isle if you have been fully vaccinated. If anyone would still prefer to join virtually, we will be continuing to do our education and announcements via Zoom.

We are going to be meeting in Fair Isle’s “Secret Warehouse” (address below) so we don’t interrupt their thankfully busy business. According to Andrew Pogue the warehouse is very basic, with no chairs, water, or restrooms- though Fair Isle’s restrooms will be available to us.

Out of respect for Fair Isle’s business, they’d like us out of the warehouse early at 8:30, but the brewery is open until 10 for us to continue to visit.

___

Our educational guest this month will be Paul Arne from The Ale Apothecary outside of Bend. Ale Apothecary focuses on local ingredients and mixed fermentations, using a very simple brewhouse. From their website: “The Ale Apothecary creates totally natural, barrel-aged beer using ingredients off our land or sourced nearby, direct from Oregon farms.”

We are also fortunate enough that Paul was able to send some bottle to Chuck’s Hop Shop for us to do a virtual tasting with him- Bottles are available now at the Greenwood location for roughly $27ish.

__

For those of you who haven’t met with us in person before, if you have homebrew you’d like to bring to share and for feedback please do so! We won’t be doing much organized tasting this meeting, but it’s always good to get another brewer’s thoughts.

Duels are still largely on hold, but may pick up again soon as we start to meet in person again.

Location

Fair Isle's Secret Warehouse!

943 NW 50th St, Suite C

Schedule

6:30-7:00: Meeting starts, share homebrew, visit.

7:00-???: Education with Paul Arne from The Ale Apothecary

Our first Brewers Happy Hour of 2021 will be with the wonderful guys at Fair Isle Brewing on Friday January 15th at 7pm. Each month we will be having a video happy hour with a different brewery to taste and talk about some of their beers.

Andrew Pogue has created a NSH 4-pack for us to show the breadth of Fair Isle's yeast culture: Madame R. Galle, Alexandra, Jean-Michel and Lydia.

From Andrew:

There are two ways folks can get the beer.

  1. They can come into our tasting room and grab the "bundle" of four 375ml bottles at 15% off, or if they just want one or two, they are welcome to purchase without a discount.

  2. They can purchase the bundle online with this link. From here they can choose to pick it up in the tasting room or receive free shipping (on the bundle only) using the coupon code "Papazian" at checkout. For shipping, they must purchase by January 11th to ensure they receive the beer.

Duels have largely been on hold, but I want everyone to be thinking about their Ultimate Summer Crusher beer, for August (maybe just maybe we can meet then, we’ll see). Our educational speaker will be John from Lowercase Brewing who will be joining us to talk about the Italian Pilsner beer style, or at least the growing American take on it. The brewer from Chainline Brewing was a part of the lager panel at Virtual Homebrew Con and highly credited John on the information he had on the style. Other examples of this style include Pivo Pils from Firestone, Terrifica from Wayfinder and Oxbow Brewing’s Luppolo. I highly recommend you try to grab the one from Lowercase or another example to drink as we talk.

From Lowercase Brewing’s website:

Crisp, floral, and refreshing- like zooming though Tuscany on a Vespa.

YEAR-ROUND OFFERING | 4.9% ABV | Modeled after Italian brewery Birrificio Italiano’s Tipopils, this beer is light and crisp with unique floral undertones. Multiple dry-hop additions as well as a careful attention to water input and fermentation temperature set this new-world pilsner apart from the rest of the world’s favorite beer style.

After we hear from John, we will move on to talk about what we are each drinking and/or brewing.

Andrew will post a Zoom invite in Slack and Facebook on the day of the event, so be sure to join us there if you haven't already. Details can be found on the Contact page.

Our next club meeting will be on Wednesday March 4th. Arrive around 7, and we’ll start at 7:30. The address is Fair Isle Brewing at 936 NW 49th

Our duels this month will be Scottish Heavy’s and an array of smoked beers! When you arrive, try out each and vote for your favorite.

If you don't know about duels, they are member driven brewing challenges that are either ingredient or style based. Upcoming duels are: 17% beers (Apr) Rye IPA, Stout, Maibock (May) American Pale Ale and Kolsch(Jun). Feel free to join in any current duels or challenge someone else to a new one!

For our education topic, Cassie is back from her trip and will lead us in a discussion and tasting of some common off-flavors.

When you arrive please fill out a nametag and a sticky note with your name and what beer you brought to share.

If you haven't been to one of our meetings, after announcements and a brief education talk we generally split into groups and try one person's beer at a time starting with the lightest, with an opportunity after each for feedback and questions so please keep side conversations to a minimum when the sharer is giving info on their recipe and process so that everyone can hear then there will be a chance for discussion. Please bring a bomber or two or growler of homebrew to share. Don't worry if you don't have any to share this time; just bring yourself.

Fair Isle is now open! We will be meeting in the brewery. The main rules will be no homebrew in the tasting room, no bringing Fair Isle beer into the meeting after it has started, and lastly, we will need to be fully out of the space at 10. We have access to some chairs, but still have need for more, so bring one or two if you can.

Andrew has talked with Trailbend Taproom, the beer bar nearby and they are happy to have us show up after, but the kitchen closes at 10, so head over a little early if you want food.

North Seattle Homebrewers Holiday Party

Well it’s that time of year again. We will be having our annual holiday party on 12/4/19 @7pm.

As many of you know our holiday party is not a normal meeting. This is a time to spend time together and share some beer. We will still have a pair of duels, herb beers and cold extraction beers. We won’t be doing organized tasting but please still bring beer to share, especially if you have anything fun that you’ve been holding onto. We will have a potluck as well so please bring a snack or dessert to share. And most importantly is the “wit” elephant gift exchange.

THE GREAT NORTH SEATTLE HOMEBREW WIT ELEPHANT:

  1. Everyone who wishes to participate must contribute a gift, wrapped, bagged, or otherwise suitably obscured. The theme is broadly defined as "Beer and/or Homebrewing" so anything beer or homebrewing related is good. Got a good bottle or two in your cellar? Spare equipment (in good shape) you're not using? Something tasty from a bottle shop? Humorously shaped novelty-ware? Doesn't have to be expensive, but certainly feel free to try and impress others with your Roman-Emperor-like magnanimity if you'd like. Hail Caesar.

  2. Someone will make little slips of paper equal to the number of gifts with written numbers. Everyone participating draws one.

  3. On the first turn, the person with paper slip #1 chooses a gift, opens it, and all admire it. "Ohhhh! Ahhhh! It's everything I've ever wanted in life! Existence is meaningless without it!"

  4. On the second turn, the guest with paper slip #2 gets the choice of "stealing" any unwrapped gift (i.e. #1's) or choosing a new wrapped one. If #2 steals #1's gift, then #1 must open a new wrapped gift. "Mine now." "FFFFFFUUUUUUU!!! Oooh shiny..."

  5. On the third turn, the guest with paper slip #3 gets the choice of "stealing" any unwrapped gift (#1's or #2's) or choosing a wrapped one.

Hope to see you there!
